Board of DirectorsCarolyn Simms, Board Chair, resides in Washougal, Washington with her husband David and three children. Carolyn graduated from the University of Portland and Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College. After passing the bar, she worked as house counsel at her father's excavation company, George Schmid & Sons, Inc. for five years. She has served as co-founder and principal for Pacific Crest Academy Catholic School. Carolyn now runs her own Law practice in Camas, Washington. Jeff Lindberg, Vice Chair, is an attorney with the Battle Ground, Washington lawfirm of Joner, Lindberg, Baker PLLC. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Portland, a master’s degree in history from Arizona State University and a law degree from Lewis & Clark School of Law. He and his wife, Rachel, are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Battle Ground. They have five children. Jeff and Rachel have both received a Catholic education at various times in their lives. Both have worked in Catholic education and firmly believe that a Christ-centered education prepares children of all backgrounds to best meet the demands of the world. They want to help make that education available to the young people of Southwest Washington.
Paula Stepankowsky, Secretary, is currently a language arts teacher at the St. Rose Catholic School in Longview, Washington. Paula attended the University of Portland for your masters in education. Prior to her current position, Paula was a regional reporter for Dow Jones Newswires. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Fort Wright College in Spokane, Wash., and a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She and her husband, Andre, and their two children are members of St. Rose de Viterbo Parish in Longview.
Doris Kuzis is a Programmer/Analyst for Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, supporting the billing function of their lab in Baltimore, MD. She has been in the information technology field for 25 years,the last 15 of which have been with Quest Diagnostics. Doris and her husband, Karl, and their three children are parishioners of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Doris has been a member of the Seton board for one year as a representative from St. Thomas Aquinas. Both Doris and her husband attended Catholic high school and believe strongly in the value of Catholic education. She got involved in the project because she saw a great need for a Catholic high school in the Southern Deanery and wanted to represent her parish in the process. Father Gary Lazzeroni currently serves as Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vancouver. He was ordained to the priesthood in June of 2007, after serving for more than 25 years as a lay ecclesial minister in both parish and diocesan ministry. After ordination Fr. Gary served for one year as a Parochial Vicar at St. Michael Parish in Olympia. He was born in Seattle and grew up in California. Fr. Gary received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Studies from Santa Clara University, a Master’s in Systematic Theology from the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley, and a Master’s of Divinity Degree from Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin.
Jim Lyons is the Vice President for University Relations at the University of Portland. Jim holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration & Political Science, and a master’s degree in Public Administration. He and his wife, Connie, are members of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Vancouver. They have four children. Jim got involved with Seton because “as a SW Washington resident for the past 10 years, I have always been amazed that we don’t have a Catholic High for our children to attend. I have always felt that with the right amount of resources, commitment, and desire it should be a reality. I’m excited about helping to make that happen and to see it evolve.”
Father Joseph Mitchell currently serves as the founding pastor for Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Vancouver, Washington. Since appointment in 1999 Fr. Mitchell managed the establishment, capital funding and construction for this new parish and church in East Vancouver. Prior this appointment, Fr. Mitchell served as pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Bremerton. He previously served as parochial vicar at St. John’s, Holy Family and St. James Cathedral in Seattle. Fr. Mitchell attended St. Thomas Seminary in Kenmore, Washington and received his graduate studies and ordination at St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Prior to pursuing his vocation, Fr. Mitchell briefly attended the University of Washington and served in the U.S. Navy. As a young student, Fr. Mitchell attended St. John’s Catholic School and Seattle Preparatory Catholic High School in Seattle. Susan Morgan, is a resident of Vancouver who is the product of a Catholic education as a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Chillicothe, Ohio. Susy earned a degree in Medical Technology from the University of Washington. She has worked as a laboratory manager, chemistry supervisor, and quality manager in the medical field throughout her career prior to her retirement. Susy has taught confirmation classes at several parishes including starting programs at St. Joseph's and her current parish of Holy Redeemer. Susy and her husband Bill have six children, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Kay Purcell M.Ed. (Ex-officio Member), as Assistant Superintendent for School Accreditation and Instructional Services for Catholic schools, works with schools throughout the Archdiocese to ensure school excellence. Kay was the former principal for St. Rose Catholic School in Longview, WA and is an experienced middle school teacher with curriculum development experience. Kay attended the University of Washington for both undergraduate and graduate school. Kay is a parishioner at St. Rose de Viterbo parish in Longview, Washington and resides in Woodland with her husband Bill Hundley.
Joe Sanches is a captain with Delta Airlines. He and his wife, Jean, and two children are members of St. Mary of Guadalupe Parish in Ridgefield. He has an Associate in Science from West Valley College, and a B.S. in Aeronautics from San Jose State University. He has been on the board for nearly seven years, helping in a variety of roles, including preparing the non-profit filing. Joe originally became involved in the project “ in the hope that my children would attend. That being no longer the case, I remain involved because I believe that the project is important to the community.”
